The basic concept behind Integrated Road Tunnel Safety Management is the mandatory practice used in European Union member nations, specifically the Netherlands. Enprodes, together with Amberg Engineering, has developed this approach which incorporates all aspects of the EU Directive on minimum requirements for road tunnel safety. In short the concept allows a Tunnel Manager to demonstrate the tunnel safety case during each phase of the project. Ideally, road tunnel safety is already part of the planning process that leads to planning permission being granted for the project. The tunnel safety case baseline created in this way is maintained and enhanced throughout the project cycle up to and including tunnel operation and maintenance. Involving the appropriate tunnel safety stakeholders from the start and actively engaging them is key to the concept.
